Home PSA testing kits
We appreciate the public interest in proactive health management and understand that making decisions about health screening can be confusing. At the Prostate Cancer Foundation of NZ, we are aware that a number of home PSA testing kits and laboratory services are now available for purchase at pharmacies or directly to the public. Many people value privacy and convenience in health decisions, so it’s understandable that these options are appealing. However, we strongly advise speaking with a healthcare professional before considering PSA testing.
International best-practice guidelines recommend that PSA testing should only occur after an informed discussion with a qualified health professional. This helps ensure you understand potential risks such as false positives, false negatives, over-diagnosis, and over-treatment. Home testing bypasses this essential step, which may lead to confusion or unnecessary worry.
To help clarify, here are some key reasons why we do not endorse home PSA testing:
- Home PSA tests may miss important factors and lead to unnecessary worry or false reassurance.
- Interpretation of PSA levels requires clinical expertise and consideration of multiple risk factors.
- Quality control and proper follow-up cannot be assured with home tests.
- Structured, risk-stratified pathways guided by health professionals reduce unnecessary biopsies and harm.
For those aged 40 and over with a genetic predisposition, those aged 45 and over with a family history of prostate cancer, and those over 50, the official health guidance is that you should engage in screening by speaking with a GP or other health professional. Taking an active role in your health is important, and we're here to support you. Our team is available to answer any questions you may have or to help you find trusted resources.
